Arkansas Trumpets at ABA
Arkansas Trumpets will rehearse at ABA on Thursday from 8-8:45 a.m.
Our eagerly anticipated performance will be Friday at 11 a.m. I know
trumpets don't work well in the mornings, so give them a lot of rest
the night before. If you have new music we should read, please
bring it. And don't forget to bring a stand, too. Thanks, John

AR Horns at ABA
A note to remind all ASBOA/ABA horn players that the Arkansas
Horns will be meeting and performing again at this year’s ABA. The
rehearsal is from 8:00 to 8:45 A.M. (Sorry!) on the 29th, and the
performance is at 2:00 P.M. on the same day. Please remember to
bring your own music stand, since I only have a limited number of my
own. Also, you might note that we only have a 45 minute rehearsal
time this year, so we will have to really get cracking (no pun
intended!) at 8 o’clock to get something ready, and still have chops
for the performance. I am assuming that we are opening the exhibits
for our performance, since that’s the time we’re at on the schedule,
so let’s all show up and show everybody how great a really big horn
ensemble can sound! RD - Robin Dauer - Arkansas State

Music Ed Apps for iPhone and iPod Touch
My name is John and I am an iPhone developer from Charleston,
SC. My brother is a band director and I have been working with him
to create music apps designed for band students. Most applications
on the iPhone and iPod touch designed for games. However, I am
trying to create applications designed for music education, being a
former band member and musician since middle school. I have been
working hand in hand with band directors and music educators to
ensure their quality. I am trying to "get the word out" to
band directors who can then inform their students. More information
about the apps I have completed so far can be found on my website:

From Lorraine Duso - Large scholarships
available New England music camp
I teach double reeds at UCA and in the summers I teach at the New
England Music Camp in Sidney, ME. We had our NEMC faculty meeting
last night. At our faculty meeting the owner of the camp said our
enrollment was way down for next session due to the economic
situation. At this point, they are looking for new students (Ages
12-18) who will at least pay their meals for the second session. I
want to tell you that if you are interested or know someone that is
interested, they are offering large scholarships for the second
session, July 27-August 17. It's a three week session. The minimum
you would have to pay is $500 as opposed to $3,000. They want to
fill the ensembles such as band, orchestra and jazz bands. Check out
the website:
www.nemusiccamp.com/
I know this means transportation, but we offer bus service from the
Boston Airport to Sidney, ME. I don't know what anyone's
schedule is like, but I thought I would make this available to you
for your students if you are interested. This is approximately a
$2500 scholarship. If you have friends or know other students who
might be interested call Dorothy Schmearer in the NEMC office at
207-465-3025 in the morning between 8:30 and 12 and she will be
happy to help you. When kids leave here they go home a
different child....more open...sociable..and more importantly a
better musician!:) The level of playing ability varies from
intermediate to advance students. We have two levels of ensembles,
intermediate and advance. We offer theory, private lessons and many
more classes. Thanks, Lorraine Duso, DMA - Oboe and Bassoon -

Update from Stan Cate
My deepest thanks to each of you who said a prayer, made a call or a
visit, sent a card or e-mail or whatever before, during and after my
recent surgery. Trust me, each has been deeply appreciated by both
Martha and me. Julia has gone WAY beyond the call of duty
keeping everyone up dated on the ASBOA message board. The e-mail
program that she coordinated with the hospital that many of you
participated in was amazing. I didn't know things like that existed.
I am doing pretty well (I think) and will get the staples out
Thursday and hope to be back to normal activities (whatever that is)
very soon. What a surprise that my lady Surgeon had formerly
been a Marine Band clarinet player and a high school band director.
Small world. Thanks again for everything.- Stan

Update from Jerry Ratzlaff
Jerry’s daughter Linsey is home from the hospital – baby Grayson is
doing well, gaining weight, but will be in the hospital for a while.
Jerry and his family are very thankful for the many thoughts,
prayers and calls for them during this difficult time. Jerry’s
number is 479-264-9088 – sorry I had a typo on the last email with
his number – it is 479 not 279 for the area code.

Update on Jerry Ratzlaff's Daughter
Jerry Ratzlaff’s daughter, Linsey, is improving, but still in the
hospital – they still want the blood pressure to stay lower more
consistently. Baby Grayson weighs about 2 ½ pounds – is on a little
oxygen as a precaution, but working through the normal concerns for
a preemie. Please continue to keep Linsey, Grayson and their family
in your thoughts and prayers.

3rd Annual Marching Clinic
UCA's chapters of KKY and TBS are pleased to announce our 3rd
Annual Marching Clinic and Band Day. The event will be on
Saturday, October 3rd. The clinic will begin at 8am and end at
approximately 1pm. Massed band and game day activities begin at 4pm
and last until the end of our UCA Bear Football Game. Bands
will get over an hour of "face time" with our clinicians. Our panel
will include nationally recognized specialists on drill, arranging,
percussion, guard, majorettes, and drum majors. Next year our
clinicians include, Dr. Brad Snow (Oklahoma State), Jerry Hoover
(Missouri State), Rich Bonner (Tarleton State), and Wayne Bovenschen
(Oklahoma State). Bands get a half hour clinic on the field as well
as a half hour video critique of their performance in our Snow Fine
Arts Recital Hall. This is an early event that is designed to help
your band wherever they are at in their season. Partial shows are
expected and encouraged. THIS IS A NON COMPETITIVE EVENT and is
there to help you prepare for the rest of the year. This
event culminates in a real college experience for your students. We
hand out music to play in the stands as well as a massed band
performance at halftime. Many bands from long distances plan on
leaving after halftime, although some end up staying the full game
when they see how much fun their students are having! Last year's
event brought over 1,500 high school students from over 14 Arkansas
schools. It was quite a spectacle. There is a limit on
clinic and massed band participation (our stadium is only so big!),
so please reserve early. Bands can either choose to participate in
both events or in the massed band only, depending on the program.
We look forward to another great event! Steven Smyth -

Help Needed - Uniforms
We are in the process of getting uniforms.
Several questions.
1. How many bands DO NOT let the students take the uniforms home?
A. How do you handle this? Give as much detail as you can.
2. How often do you have them cleaned? A. How is this paid? By
the school, the boosters, by the students?
3. Do you wear the uniform for concerts/ assessments or do you wear
another uniform or some form of more casual attire.
4. How do you handle the logistics when traveling?
Basically I want to investigate how bands handle the uniforms during
the high travel football season. Reply to

Bill Brent
Many of you may not be aware that Bill Brent’s
(director of bands at Northwestern St./All-state concert band
clinician) mom was admitted to the hospital last Wednesday about the
time he departed Natchitoches, LA for Hot Springs. Mr. Brent was
assured that his 91-year old mom was doing fine...and he did not
need to come to be by her side. Of course, his mom was on his mind
the entire time he was at all-state....but again he was constantly
assured by the nurses and his 80-year old aunt that his mom was
doing fine. Saturday after the concerts, he drove to Texas to see
her. On Sunday, she was put on a breathing machine. Things are not
looking good for Mrs. Brent. Bill is an only child...and he is
very close to his mother. She has been a woman of wonderful health
and has been VERY active until the last few weeks. She recently
passed the Texas driving test to keep her license (as a 91-year
old!). If you would like to email Bill, his address is

is no charge for admission. The UAM Symphonic Band, under the

Curnow, is based on a poem written by a young fighter pilot.
“Of Sailors and Whales”, by Arkansas composer, Francis McBeth, comes
from five scenes from the book, Moby Dick, by Herman Melville.
The overture to “Beatrice and Benedict”, by Hector Berlioz, is the
opening music to the opera, based on a play by Shakespeare.
The finale of “Pictures at an Exhibition” was written by Modest
Mussorgsky after viewing the exhibit of works by his friend, Viktor
Alexandrovich Hartmann. Everyone is encouraged to come and
listen to an evening of great music presented by an outstanding
group of young musicians in their first concert.

Music and
Materials Survey
The Music and Materials always strives to keep quality and
consistency in our required music list. We know that there are
pieces on the list that many directors feel are misplaced or do not
belong. We are asking that you please identify those pieces so that
we may begin making necessary revisions to our list. Please
take a few minutes to follow the attached link. It will take you to
a survey we have created that should make it very easy for you to
communicate to the committee concerns you may have about any piece.
Please fill out a different survey for each piece. You may fill out
as many surveys as you like, but we do ask that you provide contact
information. If we are overwhelmed by submissions, or if committee
members are not familiar with a particular piece, we may need to
contact you for further information.

Used Bassoon and/or Bocal for Sale
Anyone are interested in buying a used bassoon and/or bocal for
their music programs? It is a Fox-Renard 220 Artist model, with key
work up to High-E, and all standard rollers, plus rollers on both
sides of the pancake key. The instrument also comes with a hand
rest, crutch, and 2 Fox *CVX* bocals. The instrument was purchased
new in 2003, and has been in use and well maintained since then. The
instrument could easily carry a musician through undergraduate and
even graduate school , with the only possible exception being a
performance major. I'm selling the instrument to help pay for my new
bassoon bought in April. Asking price for the bassoon in $5,000.00,
but is negotiable. In addition, I'm also selling a Fox *CVC* 2 bocal
from my new horn,$400, as it is completely unused. I just wanted to
give directors first choice on my old instrument! Thanks so much!

missing parts, and I can't seem to find an accessory company that carries this
item in their catalog any longer. I would be interested in either a temporary

American Band College - Part II
I have gotten quite a few responses already from people interested in
attending the American Band College master's degree program and many of the
questions are similar so this email might help eliminate multiple emails of the
same questions! :-) Soon, they should have next year's information on the
www.bandworld.org website. Scott and Max
McKee gave great correspondence with me throughout the last year and a half.
Very personable and addressed my questions very quickly! Before someone
gets upset with me for trying to "not utilize the great higher educational
resources of this state," I want to first say that I am in no way trying to
discourage anyone furthering their education in Arkansas! I encourage my
students to attend our Universities vigorously! However, the ABC program is the
ONLY way I can get my master's degree with regard to time! I could in no way
attend any classes while I'm doing my full time jobs as a band director! I know
many of you feel the same way! I also am very attracted to the uniqueness of the
program which seems to be tailored to exactly what my teaching needs at this
point in my career! It has inspired in me a new appreciation for compositions
(some of which I have already performed) simply to hear from the composers
exactly where their music was inspired. Lastly, it's a great way to get new
ideas from all over the country by meeting new people and trading ideas with
teachers of great band programs! One of the neat things you get to see is
their music library. Most all the publishers send them a copy of every song they
publish to use for research! (composers listen up! if you want your works known
though-out the country, donate a copy of your best works to ABC!!!) The music
does not leave this library! It's highly guarded by an old grey haired lady who
used to run a boot camp! (not really but the security of this library is very
guarded) I think they have over 40,000 compositions in their library! Only ABC
and Southern Oregon University uses this library! Everyone else has to sign up
for a time and do their research (no book bags or purses allowed) Classes
are always in Ashland, Oregon! I know, it's in the middle of nowhere and Dr. Tim
has a whole comedy routine about going to school in Ashland so I won't ruin that
for you! The dates are always June 20 -July5! We give two concerts: one in
the Ginger Roger's theater in Medford, Oregon (two bands of 110 each giving two
different concerts) and one on the football field at Ashland High School (all
220 candidates) There's also a non-music session offered for the three days
after the July 5th test which I recommend instead of the in-between session to
give your brain and your body some rest) There's an examination before you
begin the first year of classes to find your possible areas of weakness. (this
test will also determine the subject matter of your practical application
projects) All 220 master's candidates take the same classes which are
basically are like attending an ABA or Mid-West clinic. Most of them are
extended over 2 or 3 sessions split up to give your day variety! Everyone takes
notes on the clinics which is important to finish the third year project! (good
to know BEFORE the first class!) There are two projects to complete each
year after classes are over! (always due by august 10) One is very involved and
one is not quite so involved. If I had known anyone who had attended ABC before,
these projects would have been easier to begin just because I would have known
what to expect. However, knowing might shy some people away from attending the
program but there are ALWAYS people from the later years that are willing to
offer advise on how to complete your projects!
1st year projects: Do a voice over recording of 6 bands (one of
them being my band) kind of like a judge would at contest! and Do a practical
application project from one area of weakness that is as presentable as any
publication or website or DVD, or whatever you can think of. The presentation of
the material is actually, I heard, is more important than the accuracy of the
material itself! This scares a lot of people but it's not that difficult! It
will be much easier to do my practical application the next two years because I
know what to expect now! Anyone attending that knows me can get a heads up so it
might not be so time consuming for them! MY first year project is
basically building a website which will help a beginning percussionist or
non-percussionist director help their percussionists learn timpani, complete
with video podcasts that can be downloaded and used in the classroom. I'll send
a link to that website as soon as I'm finished building it!
Second year projects: Critique lesson plans and video tape of a
sight-reading, mid-prep work and include the concert performance. two
rehearsals, and concerts. This will be done throughout this year! and Another
practical application project from the area of weakness. These are due Aug
10, 2009! So I can start on them now so next summer won't seem so hectic!
Third year projects: another practical application project.
and 20/30 (20 clinics / 30 compositions) Compile a summary of 20 clinics we
attended and how they will help us in our teaching at home. Summarize 30
compositions which had either performed or sight-read at ABC (we perform and or
sight-read at least 100 songs per summer so this will be easy) In the summary
should include enough information that will inform a person looking at
performing the piece of any information they might need to help them decide if
they want to buy it and perform it! (instrument range, short excerpts of
thematic material, percussion instruments used, basic rhythmic material, etc.)
It's very involved and intense for almost 3 weeks but simple! Three summers of
that and you have a master's in conducting! Everything we study directly
pertains to what we do daily! Everything they present at the ABC is passionately
researched so their students can directly and immediately use in the classroom.
The concepts that they teach pertaining to the overtone series and pitch is the
neatest revelation for me! Classes were like extended ABA clinics from
some of the finest teachers/ performers in the field. Like Patrick Sheridan did
the breathing gym for us for an hour, then Mareianne Gedigion (UT, Austin) did a
flute clinic. We'd have a rehearsal for an hour and a half with the third year
candidates in the morning and with the composers whenever they arrived on
campus. Hope it appeals to you! It was a blast making contacts from all
over the country! Most of them are on facebook so it will be easy to keep in
touch with them! Let me know if you have any more questions! James

American Band College
I would just like to take a moment and briefly let Arkansas directors know
that I did attend the American Band College as advertised at
www.bandworld.org . Not only do you
attend classes taught by some of the greatest minds in our field, you get to
hang out and meet them on a more personal level throughout the week. Allen
Vizzutti, Dr. Tim, Patrick Sheridan, Robert W. Smith, Robert Ponto, Ralph
Hultgren just to name a few. It was a truly an informative and rewarding
experience! This year, there were candidates from 42 states, and Canada. I
am the first candidate to attend from Arkansas! There's only one state now who
has never had a band director attend the American Band College. It's really neat
to sit around with band directors from all over the country and brainstorm
ideas! If you are interested in attending next year, put me down as a
reference and you'll get a discount! Also, you want to reserve your plane
tickets very early. My niece works at a travel agency and helped me get a great
deal on my flight. I paid half of what some of the other candidates paid for my
flight; so if you want help getting a relatively inexpensive flight, I’d be glad
to help out there too. Email me or call and I'd be glad to share more
about my experience! I really don't want to be the only person from Arkansas
next year!
I look forward to hearing from you soon! James Pianalto - Benton Junior

P.M., so we’re playing “Intro Music for the Food”. Please remember to
bring not only your horns, but also a music stand. We will need a minimum of
nine (4 to 8 parts, plus conductor), so if each person brings their own stand,
we’ll definitely be covered. Unfortunately, I cannot be with you this
year, since I have to be in Europe for a music festival at the same time. Brent

Percussion Instructor
Needed
I am looking for someone to teach percussion lessons at Catholic High
School. Lessons are taught during the school day (mid- day, although after
school is a possibility for some students) at Catholic High. We do have a
marimba as well as timpani. Students pay 20.00 per half hour directly to the
instructor. It would be convenient if you lived in the central Arkansas area.
You will be responsible for 12-15 students. It is only possible to teach 3
lessons during the school day due to time constraints but you may arrange to
teach after school as well. This would be a great opportunity for a g.a. or a
retired band director. You must be able to teach snare, as well as
keyboard and timpani. Students will be working on all three instruments. Drum
set skills would be a plus. There is also the opportunity to work our
drum-line for 50.00 per session. If you are selected for this position, you will
have to participate in a 2 hour, VIRTUS certification program. It is free and
will meet on a single night.

Please Remember Rhonda Herring and daughter
Hello all, George Pokorski here. I am making a request
that you remember one of our colleagues, Rhonda Herring, former Arkansas band
director and a very fine horn player. More importantly, I am asking you not
to forget her daughter, Katherine, who has been suffering a very serious health
issue for over two years now. Kat and Rhonda are in Chicago in a clinic that
is doing the best they can to take care of Kat. They have also been to a
clinic in Phoenix (with not much success I regret to say), and this has been a
very trying experience for Kat and Rhonda. Kat lives in pain daily. Please
take a moment and go to
www.carepages.com , click on "Visit a Care Page",
register as instructed (it's quick and painless), and then leave a note of
encouragement. The codeword for Katherine is QAT. Thanks, and I look forward
to seeing you at ABA. George

26th Annual
Paragould/McDonald's Marching Invitational
Will be Tuesday Night, October 7th, 2008. Arkansas' oldest, most continuous
competition without any interruption has served as an extremely beneficial early
season contest for directors and students alike since 1983. A few of the changes
made to this year’s contest include: caption based judging, expanded judging
panel, and increased award opportunities. Further details concerning the
competition and registration forms can be accessed by visiting the Paragould
Band website:
www.paragouldpride.org/marchinginvitational.htm If you have any
further questions or comments, please feel free to contact: Richie

ABA Registration
Thanks to all of you who sent in your ABA registrations since my email last
week. It REALLY helps when you are pre-registered. You move through the line
faster, and we are able to give more accurate numbers to the hotel, convention
center, and the catering folks. This means that your ABA works better, faster,
and more efficiently for you. For those of you who have not yet registered, it
is not too late. Please take a minute to write that check or turn in that PO
today. You know you want to hear " THE ARMY BAND"! Go ahead and get registered
so you will have a ticket! Advertisements for free tickets go out the 1st of
July in the Ft. Smith paper. It will not take long for us to run out. Please
pre-register to make sure that you have a seat for this wonderful group.
Golf people: We are up to 20 or so now. I'm sure that you saw the email from
Sean Carrier a few days ago. Please get that taken care of as soon as possible.
It is almost the 1st of July, and you are about to get paid. No excuses now for
waiting. Hotel: Almost full. Still a few rooms left, but not many. They
will hold our rooms for us only so long, then any left over are open for anyone
to reserve. Please call TODAY. John Combs - Band Director - Ramsey Jr.
