Equipment for Sale
We have several sets of 5 foot flag poles to get rid of ( a set is 10 - 15) .
Many are black or silver and a set or two is gold. These are in great shape, we
are just clearing out our Jr. high marching band closets. We also have
some old marching percussion (snares, Quads and Bass drums). They will need a
little maintenance with drum heads, and carriers. They do have carriers, some
just need a little minor repair. Most have a case and all are white (or used to
be). We don't have to sell these as a set, get what you need. We have about
three sets to get rid of. Two sets are Pearl and one set is Yamaha. Just
like the uniforms, make an offer and their yours. This stuff will be
thrown away at the end of the school year, so let me know ASAP if you are
interested. Respond to

Uniforms for Sale
In Rogers we are transitioning from 2 Jr. Highs to 4 Middle Schools. Therefore,
we will not be needing our current Jr. High band uniforms anymore. We have 164
military style band uniforms for sale. Most of the uniforms are 14 years old and
were made by DeMoulin. 35 were made by Fruhauf. I know that they sound old, but
I have made sure that the students took very good care of them. The coat
is mostly purple with a white shield on the front that has Oakdale spelled
diagonally across the front. The diagonal stripe can be removed since it is sewn
onto the coat. The collar and back of the coat have white accents with silver
piping. The trousers are high waisted with built in suspenders. They are black
with a 1.5" white stripe and silver piping. Please send all inquiries to:

Thanks From John and Suzzi Combs
Dear Bandmasters - Thank you so much for the kind words and heartfelt
prayers. I am always amazed at the closeness of the band community, but have
never felt such overwhelming love and affection. The cards, letters, emails,
plants and flowers were amazing. As everyone that has experienced it knows,
losing a parent is inevitable, but never easy. Having the support of friends
certainly eases the pain. With humble appreciation, Suzzi & John Combs

ASU Auxiliary Auditions
On Saturday, May 17, Arkansas State University will conduct Auxiliary
auditions for the 2008 Fall season. The auditions will be held at the College of
Fine Arts building on the Jonesboro campus beginning at 9 AM. The flag audition
itself consists of some basic fundamentals, then a performance of a small
routine in front of the judges. Majorettes will present a brief (1 minute) solo
routine, followed by line work taught during the audition. We have enjoyed a
great deal of success with this process; it both serves the purpose of
identifying those with the necessary skill set to perform with the band and
reducing the amount of stress generated by the audition. As always, you
are most welcome to contact me directly if I can assist you in any way!

your band/choir handbook, a list of expectations for the band and choir
including behavior in class, behavior on trips (including bus behavior),
consequences for bad behavior (in my classes, other classes or on trips), steps
up to and including being dropped from band/choir, parent expectations for
student participation, costs for participation (fees, rentals, etc.),
expectations for arrival and pick up for trips, parent and student participation
contracts and how they are to represent the school.

Yamaha Sounds of Summer Percussion Camp
Harding University and Saied Music Co. are proud to host the first Yamaha
Sounds of Summer Percussion Camp at Harding University! This camp will be a very
valuable learning experience for all levels of marching percussionists. In

2008 TBS/KKY Marching Band Clinic
Announcing our 2008 TBS/KKY Marching Band Clinic and Band Day!! Our date
this year is Saturday, September 20th. This is a NON COMPETITIVE event, staffed
by nationally known clinicians from the college, high school, and drum corps
idioms. The response to last year’s event was overwhelmingly positive. The
directors involved found the format useful and our clinicians positive and
helpful. With a few tweaks from last year’s event, this should be an outstanding
day.
Highlights of the clinic are:
- Performance at Estes Stadium (bands perform as much of their show as they
wish)
- On field clinic by clinicians for entire band
- Students are brought inside for a review of their show on the big screen and
continued critique with clinician
- Directors and Staff get separate session with a clinician focused on general
effect and performance issues
- Guard and Percussion clinicians for each band
- Observe game day rehearsal of the 220 piece Bear Marching Band
- Students Participate in a Massed Band performance at that evening's UCA
Football Game.
- High School students get to participate in the stands with the BMB and learn
what the collegiate experience is like.
- UCA Athletics supply every student with a UCA Band T-shirt to be worn during
the game.
Due to time constraints, the morning clinics are limited to nine participating
bands, though participation in the Band Day portion of the day is unlimited.
Please get applications in ASAP for the clinic spots. Anyone interested in the
UCA Marching Clinic and Band Day can email Steven Smyth at
ssmyth@uca.edu or call 501-450-5022
and I will send the registration and promotional material. Thank you - Steven

Help Needed - Color
Guard Instruction
I am needing help with what to pay for colorguard instruction. If you could
answer the following questions, that would help me put together a fair plan to
compensate a colorguard coach.
1. How much do you pay for a fall guard person?
2. Are they employed by the school or paid by your booster club?
3. How many hours/week do they work with the guard?
4. Do they come to daily rehearsals?
5. How many extra rehearsals weekly do they have for the guard?
6. Do you have a certified band director who teaches the guard?
7. Do they travel to all band performances/competitions with you?
8. Any other helpful information:

Small Band Repertoire
Project - Please Help!
Fellow Directors, I am currently undertaking a few projects that I
hope will help our small bands in the state of Arkansas. My first project is a
list of ASBOA and UIL repertoire and Concert Marches that works well for small
ensembles. Everyone in the state knows a few of these pieces, and I feel that a
comprehensive list would be very beneficial for many of the smaller programs in
our state. Please DO NOT limit this to Grade 1 literature (although those pieces
are certainly welcome, as not all of the Grade 1 list works well for small
groups). Here are some characteristics of the pieces that you might consider
recommending:
(Some pieces may have ALL of these characteristics, and some of them may have a
few)
-Pieces that have limited voices (1 or 2 clarinet parts, 1 or 2 trumpet parts, 1
or 2 trombone parts, 1 alto part, etc...)
-Pieces where the voices are doubled significantly (especially Bass voices)
-Pieces that are cued in such a way as to allow small ensembles to play them
(Declaration Overture by Smith is an excellent example of this)
-Tuba Line is doubled in the Low Brass/Reeds.
-French Horn Line doubled in other voices
-Percussion Writing calls for no more than 6 players
Again, each piece suggested does not have to have all of these characteristics;
also, all pieces that have these characteristics may not be good suggestions.
Please recommend those pieces that you KNOW have worked well for smaller groups.
Please submit the following information for each piece:
-Title, Composer, Publisher
-Grade Level (specify ASBOA or UIL, or MARCH)
-Style of Piece (March, Overture, Suite, Ballad, etc...)
-Characteristics that make it ideal for Small Ensembles
I know this is a time consuming project, but I strongly feel that this would be
an invaluable resource for our small bands. I urge everyone, directors of small
and big ensembles, to help with this project. Thank you in advance for the
continued improvement of small bands in Arkansas. Randall Standridge,

Superman. Daugherty's musical Bizzaro revels in the brash energies of rock and
big band jazz. Propelled on a zany course by a fast tempo and atonal
polyrthythmic excitement, the volume and intensity keep building until the
monstrous Bizzaro careens out of control. MARCHE HONGROISE from The

Dallas Brass
Dallas Brass is coming to South Arkansas in April. They are looking to do a
residency on Sunday April 27th. They need
3 1/2 hours to work with your students in a clinic environment and then present
a concert. It is a costly event so you would need to charge admission for the
concert and would need a "full house" to do this. I understand they will
be in Amity, AR the next week. If you live anywhere close to there and are
willing to host them, please contact Mike at:

Grammy-winning Gordon
Goodwin Brings Big Phat Band To Conway
As winner of the 2006 Grammy Award for his Instrumental Arrangement of Incredits
from the Pixar film "The Incredibles," as well as three-time Emmy Award winner
and five-time Grammy nominee, you would think that Gordon Goodwin had fulfilled
his dreams and achieved all of his goals. Not by a long shot. He has yet another
channel for success as leader of L.A.s most exciting 18-piece big band jazz
ensemble, Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band. Gordon Goodwin brings his all-star Big
Phat Band to Conway on Thursday, March 6, for one concert only, at 7:30 pm in
Reynolds Performance Hall at UCA.
Tickets range in price from $10 to $35, depending on seat location, and are
available by calling toll free 1-866-810-0012 between 10 am and 4 pm, Monday
through Friday. Discounts are available for students, UCA Alumni, seniors, and
UCA faculty and staff members. Each UCA student can acquire one free ticket,
pending availability. General public and tickets for seniors are available
online at www.uca.edu/reynolds .
Group rates, including student group prices, are still available.
Contact the box office for information.
Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band concert is an Artist in Residence project of the
College of Fine Arts & Communication and is funded in part by student arts fees.
Larry Jones, Assistant Professor of Music, whose teaching specialities are
trumpet and jazz, is the faculty sponsor of the residency.
Unlike other big bands out there, Gordon Goodwin is writing original
compositions and making his arrangements available to high school and college
jazz bands, said Jones in a recent interview. Plus, some of the hottest players
in the West Coast music scene are in his band. That, along with his composition
skills and his skill as a composer/arranger, make him and his Phat Band one of
the most dynamic groups around today.
Instrumental clinics, which are scheduled to be held in Snow Fine Arts Center on
the UCA campus on March 6, will be led by Eric Marienthal (saxophone), Wayne
Bergeron (trumpet), Andy Martin (trombone). The rhythm section clinic will be
conducted by Gordon Goodwin, with Bernie Dresel on drums, and Rick Shaw on bass.
The 90-minute clinics start at 4:30 pm.
Gordon Goodwins cinematic scoring and orchestrations can be heard on such films
as Bad Boyz II, The Majestic, Con Air, Remember the Titans, and Star Trek
Nemesis, among others. He has worked with superstars such as Christina
Aguilera, Quincy Jones, Mel Torme, Toni Braxton, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughn, and
Johnny Mathis, to name a few.
Sponsors for the UCA Public Appearances Season are TIAA-CREF, the financial
services company, and the Conway Advertising and Promotion Commission. UCA
Public Appearances is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts,
Mid-America Arts Alliance, and the Arkansas Arts Council. Conway - definitely
worth the drive!

I'm thinking about going to Oregon and continuing my education this summer at
the American Band College given through Southern Oregon University! I would like
to know if anyone else in this state has inquired about doing this. There are
graduates from all over the country but I couldn't find anyone from Arkansas.
Any reason why? Seems to me 2 1/2 weeks for three summers is a very condensed
amount of time to get a masters degree...Very reputable names on the teaching
roster...The cost seems right too!

unique because this musical experience is designed primarily for high school
juniors and sophomores. By taking part in this event, students will have the
opportunity to make music with other musicians from all across the Mid-South
region, hear performances by other groups and work with some of our nation’s
finest wind conductors and music educators. All rehearsals and
performances for the Mid-South Honor Band will be held on Saturday, April 5,
2008 on the campus of Arkansas State University – Jonesboro at the state of the
art performance facility in Northeast Arkansas, the Fowler Center. All
rehearsals are open to family members and directors. Performances are free and
open to the public. Our clinician for the 2008 Mid-South Honor Band will
be Professor Eric Rombach-Kendall. Professor Rombach-Kendall has served as
Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico since 1993. His bands have
received national acclaim through their performances and recordings featuring
Philip Smith and Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic. He has been a guest
conductor and clinician throughout the United States and Canada and is an
alumnus of the University of Michigan, where he studied conducting with H.
Robert Reynolds and Larry Rachleff. High school juniors and sophomores,
with the recommendation of their band directors, may participate in the
Mid-South Honor Band. Seniors are also eligible; however, juniors and sophomores
will receive priority consideration. Directors may nominate as many students as
they wish and the deadline for receiving applications is Friday, March 21, 2008.
We will be sending out additional information shortly and will have information
available at the ASU booth during the All-State Conference next week. We
hope that you and your students will consider joining us for this event. As
always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. You and your
students are always welcome on the ASU campus and we look forward to your
participation in the 2008 Mid-South Honor Band. Sincerely, Tim and Ken -

I was wondering if you could send out a mass email to see if anybody has a

Percussion
Lessons/Clinics
I would like to offer my services to meet any of your percussion needs! I am
willing to travel to your school and give clinics on topics of your choice (from
marching to the concert hall), as well as teach your students private lessons.
This can be arranged in any way that you would like- from an after school
session to a full "Day of Percussion" filled with multiple master classes as
well as private teaching. Aside from the students, if you have any questions as
a music educator about equipment, repairs, or general percussion education, I
would love to consult with you to build a better program. Knowing that not all
budgets are created equal, I am willing to work with you to provide as much help
as possible! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Prayer
Request - Martha Bennett
My mom and I were in a very bad auto accident this past Friday afternoon just
north of Monticello. My mom was driving and we went off the road into a gravel
ditch and she could not steer the vehicle back on to the road. We ended up going
slightly airborne and flipping once. The air bags on my vehicle did not deploy.
We both had seat belts on which is what kept us inside the vehicle. The Lord was
definitely with us or we wouldn't be here today. We just need prayers to heal
from all the bruises and handle all of the things that go along with an
accident. Thanks, Martha Bennett -
