Dixie Band Camp - 1949 From Grady Greene
Here are the two pictures, the
ones that I had at Tech Band Camp, of the 1949 Dixie Band Camp Blue and
Red Bands. The camp was three weeks long and held at "Monticello A & M."
There were three bands (Blue (1), Red (2), and White (3). All campers
were there for all three weeks. The Blue Band was directed by "Scrubby"
Watson. The other bands had various directors. Lee Wallick was one of
the mainstays of the camp and served at registrar, treasurer and general
supplier from his music store in Monticello. All rehearsals and programs
were held in the college gym (NO air conditioning - just huge open
doors!)

In the Blue Band Picture, I
have identified several of the directors. All are standing behind the
band on the left and on the right.
On the Left outside( by the
marimba) is L.E. "PeeWee"
Crumpler (Camden);
Standing past the three marimba players, the 3rd person is Ruel Oliver (bald headed); Next to Ruel is Ray Brandon; 3rd person back from the end of the Left is Gene Witherspoon (DeQueen HS) At the end of the Left group is E.J. (Ed) Marty (U of A).
In the Right hand group, the
3rd from the left is Homer
Brown (Warren HS);
Next to him is Ralph Atkinson (Stuttgart HS - My director) The 2nd sousaphone player from the left is H.L. Shepherd I (Grady Greene) am sitting 1st Trumpet player on the left hand side of the band (I had hair in those days! This was my Sr. summer, my 4th summer at this camp). |
